The NIH Common Fund’s Human Virome Program (HVP) aims to describe the “healthy” virome—the collection of viruses that normally reside in and on the human body without evidence of disease—and improve our understanding of the role it plays in shaping human health. One day, contributions from HVP may include new biomarkers for identifying emergent or chronic diseases and conditions, the development of potential therapies, as well as the discovery and identification of potential viruses that may play a central role in keeping us healthy.
