The DBHIDS Engaging Women and Girls of Color unit held its first symposium in September with the community groups who received the initial EWGOC grant. The theme of the symposium was “Flourishing, Growing, Rooted in Sisterhood” and focused on holistic health and wellness — one of the pillars of the recently launched unit. After a warm welcome from DBHIDS Commissioner Kenny Solanke, guests were treated to performances by 40+ Double Dutch Club, En L’ Air Dance Company, Khmer Arts and Culture, and West Powelton Drumline as well receiving invaluable information about health and wellness from Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown and Executive Director of the Black Women’s Health Alliance Brenda Shelton-Dunston. Panel discussions that focused on protecting your mental health were well received as the day concluded with a Mural Arts Philadelphia workshop led by Arshayla Robinson, called “Bloom where we are rooted.” For more information about EWGOC, visit DBHIDS.org/EWGOC or contact [email protected] or [email protected].
