 The Mass Effect TV show confirms its timeline and a major departure from Commander Shepard's story. Amazon's adaptation of BioWare's video game franchise was first reported in 2021, but took a major step forward in November 2024 when Daniel Casey (F9: The Fast Saga) was hired as writer and Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) set to serve as showrunner.  Now, in BioWare's blog post for N7 Day 2025, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble revealed that "the show will explore a brand-new story within the universe's timeline," "will be set after the original trilogy," and "won't be a retread of Commander Shepard's story." Read the portion of his post below:  In August 2025, reports surfaced that Amazon had scheduled production for the Mass Effect TV show to begin in late 2026, meaning that filming is still about a year away. At that time, a temporary plot summary appeared resembling the storyline of the first Mass Effect game, though fans have long doubted that the show would simply retell its plot.  One major challenge is the franchise's emphasis on player choice, which would make it difficult to create an adaptation that satisfies everyone. Fans have made vastly different decisions during their playthroughs, starting with selecting a male or female Commander Shepard.  Additionally, the Mass Effect games have never established a single canonical storyline. Any show that depicts specific events risks being seen as the official version of the saga, which could alienate parts of the fanbase.  Still, Amazon has experience handling adaptations of video games with complex lore. Prime Video's Fallout TV series, for instance, earned praise from both longtime fans and newcomers for crafting an original story that fit naturally within the existing world.   The first three Mass Effect games make up a trilogy centered on Commander Shepard, who fights to protect the Milky Way from the Reapers, a race of ancient dormant machines. In the original Mass Effect, Shepard investigates Saren Arterius, a Reaper agent.  Mass Effect 2 (2010), set two years later, follows Shepard as they confront the Collectors, an alien species abducting human colonies to aid the Reapers' return.
