😋💯 INCREDIBLE HALEEM BIRYANI | Rehman Biryani in Meerut & Haji Salamma Halim Biryani in Khurja
A Tale of Two Cities, One Iconic Dish: Haleem Biryani
Barely an hour’s drive from Delhi on the sleek Delhi–Meerut Expressway, the historic city of Meerut reveals itself as much more than a chapter in your school history book. Beyond its monuments and markets, the city is a thriving hub of street food, and at its very heart lies a dish that has defined local taste buds for decades—Haleem Biryani.
Meerut’s Iconic Rehman Biryani
Step into the buzzing lanes near Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), and you’ll spot a crowd that never seems to thin. They’re all here for one thing: the legendary Rehman Biryani. What began in 1967 as Isaad Bhai’s modest food cart has grown into a landmark eatery, now run by the founder’s family. And yet, the menu remains remarkably simple—there’s just one dish, Haleem Biryani, and it’s all you need.
Haleem, a dish with roots in the Middle East, is a slow-cooked stew of lentils, broken wheat, spices, and tender meat. The Meerut version, often called daleem, stands apart from its Hyderabadi cousin. Here, the meat is pre-cooked, deboned, and sliced before being folded into the creamy mixture, so every spoonful offers both hearty bites and velvety texture.
What truly elevates the experience is the way it’s served. A bed of simple yakhni biryani is scooped into a steel bowl, crowned with a generous ladle of golden daleem, and finished with fried onions, fresh coriander, a wedge of lemon, and a hint of chaat masala.
Khurja’s Hidden Gem
A short drive further, about 100 km from Delhi, lies Khurja, better known for its ceramics than its cuisine. But tucked inside the old lanes near Daulat Khan Masjid in Mughal Pura is another revelation—Haji Salamma Halim Biryani. Founded in 1958, this eatery has grown from a tiny rented shop into a local institution.
The haleem here carries a similar richness to Meerut’s, but the biryani takes on its own personality. After the hearty stew is ladled over the rice, the dish is finished with crispy onions, a drizzle of spicy rogan (flavored oil), coriander leaves, and—if you’re feeling adventurous—a fiery chutney on the side.
A Culinary Journey Worth Taking
Whether in Meerut or Khurja, haleem biryani is more than a meal; it’s a culinary tradition, an edible slice of local history. Affordable, authentic, and endlessly flavorful, it’s the kind of dish that justifies the drive—and makes for a story your taste buds won’t forget.
