Title: Signature of Consciousness in the Transient Dynamics of fMRI Brain Activity.
Session: Oral Session
Speaker: Scott Ensel
Abstract: Detecting residual consciousness in patients remains a difficult clinical problem. Several brain-imaging tests have been proposed to detect residual signs of consciousness, but most of them require subjects to perform difficult and active cognitive tasks [1, 2]. Several groups have recently started to explore the use of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to detect and classify different levels of consciousness [3-5]. At rest, the brain spontaneous activity organizes in highly structured functional networks and the spatial organization and temporal dynamics of these networks have recently been used to index ongoing mental scenarios. However, how these networks reorganize spatially and temporally with reduced level of consciousness is still unclear. To target this knowledge gap, we measured spontaneous brain activity by functional MRI at rest and under anesthesia in monkeys.
