Which is the best engine placement: front-engine, mid-engine, or rear-engine?

Front-engine cars are probably the most common, because they allow for more interior and cargo space. They're also easier to access for maintenance, and can be cooled more easily. Unfortunately, they generally have very front-biased weight distributions, which can cause understeer. A lot of Ferraris have a front-engine design, because Enzo Ferrari once said: "The horse does not push the cart, it pulls."

The mid-engine design is very popular in sports cars because of its near-perfect balance. These cars generally have a very even weight distribution, a lower center of gravity, and better handling in general.

Finally, there's the rear-engine design. Although this engine placement was popular decades ago, it is featured in very few cars today. Rear-engine cars usually have a fair amount of interior space, but are extremely prone to oversteer (due to their rear-biased weight distribution).

So, a front-engine car is probably best if your looking for a practical car, while the mid-engine design remains best for supercars.
