Lose That Long Face - Judy Garland - Previously Unreleased Complete Version

Описание к видео Lose That Long Face - Judy Garland - Previously Unreleased Complete Version

Here is “Lose That Long Face” as performed by Judy Garland and Monette Moore in "A Star Is Born” - finally in its complete, unedited version - thanks to the release of previously unreleased raw footage.

Note: The film footage is married to clips of that raw footage, which is why there is a difference in film quality.

In 2016, a partially complete version premiered here at The Judy Room, with the newly found audio of the middle section of the song, featuring jazz singer Monette Moore singing with alternate lyrics with Judy Garland. Garland collector Rick Smith had discovered the playback disc that included the previously thought lost 28-second midsection of the number. That section was cut prior to the film’s initial release (before the later infamous cuts). John H. Haley of Harmony Restorations remastered the playback disc. For that video, we had to “cheat” a couple of shots to cover the audio that was still missing footage. Not anymore!

In 2016, without all of the footage for this lost vocal, we had to cheat a bit of the number just as the film’s director, George Cukor, did when he trimmed it. Now, we get to see exactly how the extended version of the number played out, without the “cheat” shot (the two men on the camera boom).

You’ll notice a drop in audio quality from the stereo film soundtrack to the playback disc, which is the only source (in mono) of this previously missing section.

Originally, Vicki (Judy) sang with Moore and kept going, into the pottery studio and back out, then around and into the dance break we see in the final film version. When this section was cut, there was no clear edit for the dance break and it was too late to call everyone back for just one shot. So, Cukor used the shot of the two men on the camera boom. No one had any idea that it was a “cheat shot.” Now we can see that the number originally did not have any cutaway shots from the performance.

Enjoy!

A huge thanks to Histato M for obtaining and sharing this extra footage with us, to Rick Smith for sharing his rare playback disc, and to John H. Haley for his great restoration of the playback disc.
