The comeback of Chandrababu Naidu in Andhra Pradesh is also the comeback of the Amaravati capital project. In the first of the action, the state's chief minister has asked to speed up the construction work. And in all likelihood, the work on the residential complexes for MLAs and MLCs will be completed in nine months.
Alongside, a ‘jungle clearance’ exercise has also been initiated at the capital site. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority has started clearing the weeds from 25 designated areas. Not just this, the authority also prepared estimates to carry out further clearance works - which would require approximately 36.5 crore rupees. The tender process - of the clearance exercise - will be completed in a week and the work is expected to be completed in one month.
Remember, the state's municipal administration and urban development minister Ponguru Narayana recently said that phase 1 of the development project would be completed in about 30 months or 2 and a half years. He said that necessary infrastructure such as Assembly and Secretariat buildings, quarters for ministers, MLAs, MLCs, officials, and other staff will be completed during this first phase. Overall, the development of Amaravati will be done in three phases with a total cost of 1 lakh crore rupees.
In the later phases, we will witness construction related to metro rail as well. Overall, the state government has shown confidence that the capital construction will boost the economic growth of all the districts.
But it's not the first time the TDP government and its leaders have believed in their vision of making Amaravati the state's modern capital. In the 2014 state elections run-up, TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu had pitched Amaravati as the state's capital. He had also envisioned the city as an epitome of ambition and modernity. And in 2014 itself, the work on the aspirational project had kickstarted but in 2019, the Naidu-led government was ousted. During this period, the work on the Amaravati project came to a screeching halt.
But the tables have turned. As the TDP government stormed back to power after a gap of 5 years- Amaravati seems to have sprung back into life again.
But Naidu's ambitions are far bigger. After the Telugu Desam Party registered a thumping victory in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu has expressed a desire to revive the party in Telangana also. And the immediate target for Naidu appears to be the Greater Hyderabad municipal elections, which are due next year. Will Naidu be able to fulfill his dreams? It's a wait-and-watch scenario for now.
