When the USS Princeton's cannon the Peacemaker malfunctioned and exploded it costs the lives of several men in high positions of the United States government. Had President John Tyler been a little less fortunate he would have likely also been killed.

Among those killed were Secretary Abel Upshur, Secretary of the Navy Thomas Walker Gilmer, Captain Beverley Kennon, Senator David Gardiner and attorney Virgil Maxcy. David Gardiner was the father of John Tyler's future wife Julia Gardiner. Many held Captain Robert Stockton responsible for the incident.

Had Tyler been killed he would have been the 2nd president to die while in office. The first to die in office was the previous president William Henry Harrison. While Tyler survived he was hurt politically. He'd lost some of his closest allies and the incident likely delayed the annexation of Texas.
