EASY Valentine Play Along with Singing Game

Lower elementary music students and music teachers love this EASY Valentine play along with singing game! (See below for game instructions.) Divide the class in half, invite one group to do the rhythm play along while the other plays the game, and then switch! Perfect for first and second grade, “Penny Palomine” by Lisa Gillam has a super simple melody with easy lyrics. Kids LOVE this awesome Valentine rhythm play along. Students in first grade and second grade will ask for this one again and again!

Game Instructions:
Option 1 - In and Out the Windows
1. Choose one student to be Penny Palomine.
2. Invite the remainder of the class to form a standing circle with an arm’s length between each student.
3. Penny will walk around the circle weaving in and out the windows as the verse progresses.
4. At the end of the verse, Penny stops next to the nearest student. That person becomes Peter Palomine, and the game continues.
5. Consider inviting the old Penny and new Peter to complete a basic pat-a-cake clapping pattern before switching places for some added fun!

Option 2 - Beat Passing Circle Game
1. Lead the class in forming either a sitting, or standing, circle.
2. Pass an object from one student to the next to the beat of the music. (A hand-clapping pattern like “Down by the Banks” would also work well here!)
3. The student who has the object at the end of the verse is “out” and may play the rhythm play along
4. The circle gets smaller, and the game continues.
