Congratulations to our new Transportation Surtax Oversight Board Chair Anthea Pennant-Wallace and new Vice Chair Debbie Madden who were selected to serve at the May 2 Oversight Board Meeting.
Anthea Pennant-Wallace -- serving on the board as the Designee of Broward College--has over 20 years of experience in social services, economic and business development, fundraising and advocacy.
Debbie Madden -- serving on the board in the Environmental Sciences category--practices environmental law. She is a shareholder with Gunster corporate law firm and a former member of the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals.
We look forward to their contributions as they help guide the future of MAP Broward.

🚦MAP Broward - The Mobility Advancement Program🚦

Broward County has a detailed, 30-year Mobility Advancement Plan to implement the local 1% Transportation Sales Surtax approved by voters in November 2018: Penny for Transportation. The Plan is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve roads and bridges, enhance traffic light timing, develop safe sidewalks and bike paths, expand mass transit, fully fund special needs/on-demand services, fully fund community shuttles, connect multi-use paths, enhance school safety zones and fund a variety of city transportation projects.
🚦MAP Broward - The Mobility Advancement Program, describes all elements of the 30-year project-based plan including transportation, public works, municipal projects, innovation investments, planning, operations, maintenance, and administrative support services used to operationalize the Program.
🚦MAP Broward continues to improve Broward’s economy by generating revenues and enhancing our transportation infrastructure. Over the 30-year period, we will continue to see roadway improvements, lighting and drainage projects, transit service enhancements, and various data and technology research and transportation-related studies to allow the County to invest in transportation technology and innovation.
New projects are also a significant element of the plan, with over 800 county and municipal projects approved since April 2019. A full transit systemwide study is underway, looking at existing service, while also evaluating premium transit investments like express bus service and rail.
The 30-year transportation surtax program goals are as follows:

🚥 An overall program goal of 30% for local business participation benefits certified small businesses registered in Broward County. This ensures surtax dollars benefit local communities, businesses, and employment. Keeping local dollars working in our local economy!
🚥 A goal of $2.5B of leveraged funds from state and federal sources expands the resources available to invest in transportation initiatives, using a local dedicated source of revenue
🚥 Capacity building and technical assistance to assure small businesses are certified and can compete for surtax funding
🚥 Direct, indirect, and induced job creation in many sectors, including high-wage industries, anticipating 30,000 new jobs over 30 years
🚥 Promote employability and equity with apprenticeships and other programs directed at areas with high unemployment and under employment
🚥 Connect affordable housing to public transit to improve mobility access and affordability
The citizens of Broward County overwhelmingly decided that investing in the future of transportation is a community priority.
