Goldfish Tank Size? Not What You Think!

Aquarium, goldfish, need a tank size that’s adequate for them to live an enriched life. There’s a lot of misconceptions as far as figuring out the perfect aquarium size for keeping goldfish. When in reality, there’s no perfect answer when it comes to keeping pets in a cage. As a general rule of thumb goldfish should be kept in a 30 gallon aquarium and larger. That being said, there are multiple different types of goldfish that grow a lot larger than others and that’s a big variable.

There are two types of goldfish in the aquarium hobby. There are fantail, goldfish, and single tail goldfish. Single tail goldfish are going to grow a lot larger than fantail goldfish. This means that this type of goldfish is going to need a lot larger of an aquarium. Single tail goldfish tank roll over 12 inches in length while fantail goldfish tend to stick around that 6 to 8 inch mark. This means that fantail, goldfish or a better option if you have a smaller aquarium.

a general rule of thumb for keeping goldfish is to have at least a 40 gallon aquarium for fantail goldfish. For single tail goldfish, you’re going to want as large of an aquarium as possible or even a pond. Single shell, goldfish control, over 12 inches long and they swim a lot. Not only do they sell a lot but they swim back-and-forth nonstop. This means you should probably be keeping fantail goldfish if you want to have a smaller aquarium. On average fish keepers, keep fantail, goldfish in 40 gallon aquariums to 200+ gallon aquariums.

So there’s no perfect answer on what tank size to get your goldfish. The general rule of thumb is to give your fish enough space to move around in the aquarium. Use your best judgment and do some research on water parameters. The biggest setback on aquarium size is actually how fast the water parameters go. Bad with your goldfish. The nitrate levels are going to be what you need to watch. When your nitrate levels get around 30 to 50 ppm that’s when you’re going to need to be doing a water change.
