Thank you for viewing. My name is Frank Iosue. I am a published poet and a lover of poetry. I produced this video showcasing an amazing group of 6 memorable poems from one of the truly iconic works of 20th century American poetry, written and read by one of the most important, prolific, enigmatic and tragic poets of the 20th Century....John Berryman ( October 25, 1914 – January 7, 1972 )... It's his masterwork "The Dream Songs", and this video features his introduction to "The Dream Songs", and his reading of Dream Songs #1, #14,#22, #77, #89 & #384.
John Berryman published 13 volumes of poetry ( including "Collections" and "Selections" ), and 7 volumes of prose and fiction. He won The Pulitzer Prize in 1965, and The Bollingen Prize and The National Book Award in 1969. Berryman's major poetic breakthrough came after publication of the first volume of "The Dream Songs", "77 Dream Songs", in 1964. The "dream song" form consists of short, 18-line lyric poems in three stanzas. They are, predominantly, written in free verse, with some stanzas containing irregular rhymes and meters. "77 Dream Songs" ( and its sequel "His Toy, His Dream, His Rest" ) centers on a character named Henry...Berryman explains more about Henry in his introduction, which is presented in this video.
The 2 volumes were later combined and republished as "The Dream Songs" in 1969. In total, Berryman published 385 Dream Songs. The Dream Songs are powerful, imaginative, brilliant, breathtaking and, often, eccentric and inscrutable...much like the man, himself. Berryman committed suicide on January 7, 1972.
This video includes a biography of Berryman, the audio of an Introduction to the works, by Berryman, and his reading of the 6 poems...along with the text of the poems, and accompanied by attendant imagery and music, to enhance the experience.
