The United States was a little slow to get into the steam locomotive game, but once it got started, The DeWitt Clinton was at the vanguard. It was only the third US-built locomotive, and the first to ever operate in the state of New York.

Built to both compliment, and compete with, the newly-opened Erie Canal, the DeWitt Clinton was first fired up in 1831 and quickly achieved the incredible, and nearly unthinkable speed of 30 miles per hour! By comparison, the main competition, the Erie Canal, and horse-drawn carts, tended to travel at closer to 2-3 miles per hour at the time.

The Mohawk and Hudson Railroad quickly put this amazing new locomotive to use, first pulling passengers on Sept. 24, 1831. Of course, those passengers didn't exactly travel in luxury.

While the original was only in operation for two years before being replaced by more advanced designs, amazingly, this famous replica was actually in operation for more than 60 years! It visited worlds fairs, railroad festivals, and more, all over the country, usually giving rides to all who wanted them. It acted as an ambassador for the railroad, and for early American Industrial Revolution technology.

Today, although no longer running, it continues its ambassadorial role in the Henry Ford Museum.
