High Residue Field with Resurrected 25-Year-Old Buffalo Cultivator

Описание к видео High Residue Field with Resurrected 25-Year-Old Buffalo Cultivator

The field and farmer needed help fast; several unfortunate factors led to this emerging field situation.
1. No-Till operation, corn stalks were not shredded or disked
2. Non-GMO Soy Beans were planted between the standing rows of the harvested 200 Bushel Non-GMO Corn
3. A failed application of herbicide
4. Flooding and wind caused heavy residue buildup throughout the field.

The customer called for advisement on settings and adjustments for a recently purchased 6600 Buffalo Cultivator. He had recently purchased this implement from a dealer who combined an 8-row and 6-row unit into a folding 12-row.

He stated they had an impassable field due to high residue and failed herbicide application. He had spent a few days tweaking and adjusting the cultivator but was unsatisfied with the performance.

Our resident cultivator expert of 40 years, Dale Kumpf, took the call. After a short Q & A with the customer:

1. Plugging due to the high residue
2. Not properly cutting the weeds
3. Wore out discs
Dale advised few adjustments would improve the performance and efficiency of the cultivator.

There are two golden rules when cultivation through residue:
1. You must cut a path for whatever you drag through the soil and residue
2. Sweeps must get under the residue completely

The plugging was caused by uncut residue not flowing through the cultivator.

The adjustments needed:
- Replacing the worn coulter discs
- Proper cutting of residue and soil
- Adjusting the TopLink
- Increased down pressure
- Adjust sweep angle

After making the suggested adjustments, speed increased, rows were cleaner, and he was no longer plugging.

The customer made a second pass thru the field with a weed wiper to take out in-row and above canopy weeds.

This video is a testament to the abilities of a Buffalo Cultivator. A good cultivator will do the following:

- Explode the soil, exposing weed roots to the sun (dry & die)
- Cutting roots subsurface, killing weeds between rows
- Flow dirt into crop row, covering smaller weeds in row
- Passing dirt and residue out the back without plugging
