This module examines how intensifying wildfires and smoke-related air pollution are reshaping public health, migration, and climate resilience. Drawing on research from McLeman (2014), the Annual Review of Public Health (2021), and Science Advances (2023), it explores the links between environmental hazard, social vulnerability, and governance capacity in managing air-quality crises.
Through case studies from California, Australia, and Canada, the lecture demonstrates how wildfire smoke has become a transboundary threat that endangers communities far beyond burn zones, disproportionately affecting low-income and Indigenous populations. Framed through a climate justice lens, it highlights how exposure, inequality, and limited adaptive capacity intersect to determine who suffers most—and who can recover. Ultimately, it emphasizes that building resilience to wildfire and air pollution requires integrating public health systems, land-use planning, and equitable adaptation policy.
