(12 Jun 2018) U.S. Senators expressed cautious optimism about the outcome of the U.S summit with North Korea, yet emphasized there is a "long road to go" before the meeting can be viewed as progress in the right direction.
While Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said he's glad US President Donald Trump met with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, he cautioned it remains to be seen if the North Koreans will try to back out of any deal.
Yet he also warned that it would be a mistake for Kim to try to deceive Trump, using the recent spat with Canada's prime minister as an example of what happens to foreign leaders when they upset Trump.
"The worst thing you can do to President Trump, if you're a foreign leader, is try to play him," Sen. Graham said.
Democrats said the joint statement between the two leaders did not offer a lot of details and any treaty should be approved by Congress.
"What we have is a very vague on specifics framework," Sen. Richard Blumenthal said. "It maybe is a cause for hope, but hardly confidence."
