It was in 2005 when Vikas Swarup’s ‘Q & A' was published, which was later adapted into the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. However, as early as 2004, Film4 Productions had called Swarup and asked him to permit them to adapt the book into a film. As soon as permission was granted, British screenwriter Simon Beaufoy wrote the screenplay, and the work was sent to director Danny Boyle.

The casting of Dev Patel in the film has a very fascinating story behind it. When Boyle came to Mumbai and began auditioning people for the title role, he realized that all the actors had puffed bodies with bulging biceps and six-pack abs and what he was looking for was a more vulnerable look.

However, it was by luck that Boyle’s daughter was a fan of the BBC show ‘Skins’ in which she saw Patel. She recommended him for the role in Slumdog Millionaire to her father, which finally led to Patel being cast in the title role, and as Swarup says, “the rest is history!”
