Sugarcane or sugar cane is a tall, perennial grass (usually a hybrid) used to produce sugar. The tree is 2–6 m (6–20 ft) tall with a stout, jointed, fibrous stem that contains a lot of sucrose that accumulates in the internodes of the stem. Sucrose (table sugar) is extracted from sugarcane in specialized mills. It is consumed directly in confectionery, used to sweeten drinks, as a preservative in jams and preserves, as a decoration for cakes and as a raw material in the food industry.

Sugarcane processing produces cane sugar (sucrose) from sugarcane. Other products of the processing include bagasse, molasses and filter cake.

Bagasse, the dry fibrous portion remaining from sugarcane after extracting sugarcane juice, is used for many purposes:

Fuel for boilers and furnaces
Manufacture of products from recycled paper, paperboard and paperboard
Agricultural mulch film
As raw materials for chemical production
In 2020, global sugarcane output reached 1.87 billion tons, of which Brazil produced 40% of the world's total, India 20% and China 6%.
