Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and Censorship Controversies
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has recently been the subject of public discourse following instances of heavy censorship of multiple films over references to caste, mythology, and politics.
• Status and Mandate: The CBFC is a statutory body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It operates under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and its associated rules. Its primary function is to regulate the public exhibition of films, and no film can be released publicly without its certification.
• Structure: It is headed by a Chairperson and includes 12–25 members appointed by the Central Government. It operates through nine regional offices and is supported by Advisory Panels.
• Certification Categories:

Universal: Suitable for all age groups.

Universal with Parental Guidance: For children below 12.
A
Adults Only: Restricted to adults.
S
Special Class: Restricted to specific groups (e.g., doctors).
• 2023 Amendment: New age-based sub-categories (UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+) were introduced to align with global standards.
