You probably know that a samurai who has lost his lord or who has been expelled from his clan for his crimes is called a "ronin.”

Becoming a ronin meant that both the mansion and salary were taken away from them, so most of them drifted to the cities in search of a job. If a person was very talented in studies or martial arts, he might be able to serve another clan again, but this was quite rare.

In anime and movies, ronin are often associated with fighting, but how did they survive in real life?

1. Dojo instructor
2. Teacher at a private school
3. Bouncer for gambling parlors
4. Street performer
5. Shakuhachi playing monk

Those with talent could open their own dojo or school and gather people, but others became bouncers in underground places. Becoming a bouncer might have been a rather ok job, but those who couldn’t do that became street performers to earn bits of coins.

If he had skills of playing the shakuhachi, he could become a 虚無僧 Komusō (shakuhachi playing monk) to earn small amounts of money from people too.

In any case, it would have been quite unfortunate compared to his life when he was a samurai.
