We traveled to the St. Johns River for a Bass Nation High School & Junior fishing tournament, arriving a day early to get some much-needed practice in. Unfortunately, practice couldn’t have gone worse — not a single bass hit the deck.

Tournament day brought even more challenges. The boys launched and went to work in an extremely tough fishery, while I fished away from the tournament crowd. Mechanical issues quickly turned the day upside down, leaving me broken down on the river.

Despite grinding all day, the boys missed two big bites and ultimately came into weigh-in with zero fish. It wasn’t just us — only 4 out of 11 teams were able to weigh in a bass, and it took just 2.82 pounds to win the Junior Division.

This video shows the reality of competitive bass fishing — tough conditions, hard lessons, and the importance of perseverance when things don’t go your way.
