It's evident that the FBI task group has been searching for Sam all night long because they are still looking for the youngster as the sun is coming up. Ironically, the child in question is safe and sound and, for the time being at least, unaware of the situation he was just placed into. While she's too busy hurrying his children off to school, Robbie uses his cousin Maeve's excuse of phoning in sick from work to avoid raising any red flags. Cliff, Robbie's buddy and collaborator, becomes alarmed after the house is empty. MZ, the person Robbie has been texting, hasn't mentioned the Nances having a child, but what has left Cliff more disturbed are the dead bodies they've left in their wake, including their friend Peaches
The gang's local chapter president, Jayson, is canoodling with his wife, Eryn, when he receives a call about the robbery that has killed some of their own members. As a result, he calls "an emergency church meeting" for the other members. Word of what happened at the Nances' place is already getting out among the Dark Hearts. The situation becomes even more complicated when Robbie and Cliff eventually open the duffel bag they carelessly stole from the residence and discover that it contains a tonne of fentanyl but no cash. Not only is it more valuable than any money they could have stolen, but it's also considerably more difficult for them to get rid of these drugs without raising suspicions.
Meanwhile, Robbie feeds Sam a few lies interspersed with significant truths over pancakes, and other small pieces of breadcrumbs confirm why he has been going after drug houses specifically associated with the Dark Hearts: because his late brother, Billy, was a member of the gang before passing away inexplicably. Even though no one was ever found guilty, it turns out that Maeve also believed that someone in the Dark Hearts had killed her father. However, when Sam tells her the truth about his name, a quick Google search of breaking news headlines shows how much trouble Robbie has caused for them all.
Tom and Detective Anthony Grasso decide to begin with the person the task force has the closest connection to the criminals: Kaylee Prater, the woman Peaches proposed to before he died. Of course, the girl has no idea what Peaches was involved in last night's home invasion or who the men he had committed the crime with are, and she becomes too hysterical to ask any more questions. The two then meet up at task force headquarters, but not before Grasso tries to strike up a conversation about the possibility of spending "some quality family time" and his tenure in the FBI, which is now approaching twenty-plus years.
There isn't much time to think before the group gets together to discuss what they know, but it seems most crucial to remember that the Dark Hearts' success in the drug-running industry is largely due to their willingness to amputate any weak limbs. "You can bet they're going to unearth it by any means necessary if the gang has a mole helping Robbie's crew hit their houses," Grasso says. Their boss, Perry, is even more concerned since a child's life is at stake when he meets with Jayson in private to find out if anyone has attempted to dispose of the fentanyl that vanished from the crime scene.
Tom's oldest daughter, Sara, is flying in for her brother Ethan's sentencing on Wednesday, which still hangs over the family even as Emily, his adopted daughter, meets with a school counsellor to discuss all that's happening at home. As she admits, Emily's greatest worry is her brother's release, which is one of the reasons she is still unsure about making her own statement. The atmosphere is noticeably chilly when Sara eventually shows there, and the family gathers after pizza to discuss what to anticipate at the sentence. Although Ethan had entered a guilty plea to third-degree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years, the title of the episode alludes to family claims that could result in a reduced sentence.
