A man flying an ultralight airplane crashed into a mountain lake.

Two people saw the plane go down into Lake James in McDowell County around 8:30 p.m. last night, the witnesses were on the lake boating.

They say they heard the plane overhead shortly before sunset last night.

The plane was apparently flying normally as it approached the lake at the Moose Lodge Beach, when it dropped into the water.

The manager at Burnette's landing tells us those witnesses are his two grandsons and they saw it all.

Gary Nanney, resident, they were just fishing down there at the moose lodge, they seen this little plane coming over, they thought he was just flying over, it just flew right into the water in front of them, bam, right into the water, and naturally, they quit and run over and got the man out, the man was swimming around right there and they got him out.

Nanney says his grandsons pulled the pilot on board this pontoon boat and took him back to Burnette's landing.

Nanney says he saw the pilot, who appeared to be soaking wet but showed no signs of any injuries.
