May 11, 1970: The Tornado: One of the hardest hit areas was a residential neighborhood north of downtown Lubbock. The Lubbock Memorial Civic Center opened in 1977, a visionary project built where the devastated neighborhood once stood. The facility was dedicated to the 26 individuals who lost their lives on May 11.

Since 1977, the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center has been the site of events, large and small, bringing in visitors from across the South Plains and beyond. In event year 2018 – 2019, the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center hosted 472 separate events, which were attended by 370,739 people.

In its 43 years, the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center has had no major additions and can no longer meet requirements for some events. Renovations have only been able to provide cosmetic updates and resolve code issues. The Lubbock Memorial Civic Center needs our help. It is time for the Lubbock Community to once again be visionaries. The facility needs larger exhibit, banquet, and meeting room spaces to continue to be an important venue for the next 50 years.
