The RYOBI 18V ONE+ HP Compact Brushless 1/2" Drill/Driver has a two-speed gearbox (0-450 and 0-1,700 RPM) and a 24-position clutch. The 1/2 in. single sleeve ratcheting chuck is clad with a unique plastic knurling pattern to provide a durable grip. This drill is available on its own or in a kit with the 1/4" impact driver.

We tested this drill pretty hard with longer use with smaller bits and also with shorter use and larger bits. The thermal imager tells us what is happening inside the tool. The good news is that the heat is kept near the rear of the motor area and it does not creep down the handle.

The LED light is supposed to give us feedback on any issues the tool is having, but most of the time we do not get any, even with a larger battery pack. It seems that the lack of communication between the tool and the battery leaves us still guessing. Ryobi touted the upgrade in electronics, but still only uses the positive and negative connections on the battery, leaving 4 other available connections unused.

This drill did prove it can take a beating and keep running, and that is a good thing for any tool!
