A stroke can be serious in different ways. To the person experiencing the stroke, it's a loss of brain function and possibly a piece of themselves. They may lose their ability to walk safely, cook, work with their hands, or even speak and communicate.

When a person breaks an arm, they typically believe it can be healed and following their recovery they will return to life as usual. Who they are as a person has not changed. After a stroke, the person may believe they will live through the event, but that they may live in disability. This is something that frightens most people and is a major reason why a stroke is indeed a very serious medical event.

If you are experiencing a stroke, the faster you receive proper medical attention, the less damage will occur in your brain. Don't try to drive to the hospital; call 911 immediately.
