In the vast majority of mystery and suspense narratives, female
characters tend to appear in one of three roles: victim, femme
fatale, or detective. While this group of roles is not necessarily
restrictive, it is, however, incomplete. In this lecture, we’ll see how
the genre’s representation of the female experience has become
much more complex and nuanced. For example, writers are more
likely to use strong women protagonists who don’t have to seduce
men, or they feel free to create female characters who are the killers
rather than the victims. Moreover, some examples of the genre focus
on relationships among women characters; in these cases, male
characters play a secondary, rather than a primary role.
