Some strange facts of the English Language

Описание к видео Some strange facts of the English Language

The strange facts of the English language never fail to entertain me. Plurals, People, Places and the three-letter word, put, are examples of its eccentricity. Like magpies, we have borrowed and stolen words from many different langauges. We even took "penguin" from the Welsh! We are believed to have around 300,000 words in our dictionary of common words both written and spken compared to the German with 130,000 and the french with only 100,000. Despite its eccentric disregard of linguistic rules it is still the language of Chaucer, Shaekspeare, Dickens, Wordsworth, Jane Auesten, JK Rowling - and the King James Bible.
