Thief is an action/stealth video game. Developed by Eidos-Montreal and Published by Square Enix. The game is set in a dark fantasy world inspired by Victorian, Gothic and steam punk aesthetics in a place known only as The City. You take on the role of Garrett a master thief who intends to steal from the rich. Players must use stealth in order to get to the prize, with violence being left as a minimally effective last resort. Garrett carries a blackjack used to knock guards' unconscious, collapsible compound bow, which is used for both combat and non-lethal purposes and a claw used for grappling.

Thief starts off with Garrett being paired with his former apprentice/accomplice named Erin. Both accepting the same job to steal an artifact called the Primal Stone by their contact Basso. On their way to the job Garrett steals Erin's claw without her noticing, because she usually uses it to kill guards when not necessary. When they arrive at their job's location, Baron Northcrest's Manor, they find a ritual taking place. Garrett has a bad feeling and calls of the job, Erin disagrees and goes ahead. That's when things go south, a mysterious cosmic energy escapes from the stone consuming Erin and while Garrett looks on at the glow he collapses. After being unconscious for a year, Garrett awakens from his magic hangover and returns to The City only to learn that it is being plagued by a disease of unknown origins simply called The Gloom, and the Baron has put the city on lock down because of it. Garrett goes back to his hideout and is hired by Basso to steal a ring from a man named Cornelius, who has recently died. Garrett sneaks into a foundry where victims of the Gloom are being disposed. Right as Garrett grabs the ring, he is found by the Baron's right hand man the Thief-Taker General and he flees. After completing the job, Garrett is introduced to Orion a man who leads the resistance against the Baron's tyranny and hires him to infiltrate the House of Blossoms brothel in search for an ancient book.
