28 Year Later: Inside the Tricks That Make It So Scary | Collider BTS
Sound designer Johnnie Burn goes behind the scenes with Collider to reveal how the film’s audio was built to feel raw, animalistic, and immersive—sometimes by literally moving bodies in the booth, other times by blending human voices with coyote wails so you question what you’re hearing.

Burn explains why emotion leads the mix, how silence lets your imagination do the scaring, and why authenticity matters (“you can tell when it’s fake”). He shares the workshop process behind a pivotal guttural roar, ultimately performed by a death metal vocalist, and how the team layered coyotes, pigs, and even lions into the infected’s voices.

With no electricity or tech in the story world, the team recorded nature deep in quiet Welsh woods to build a Britain without traffic hum. Burn also recalls the “hanging man” scene recorded in a controlled booth with a plastic bag, and crafting the eerie Bone Temple atmosphere using wind instruments, flutes, and even scaffolding poles played “badly.” Finally, he breaks down the complex Causeway sequence, balancing threat, footsteps, and the chase of an “alpha” against the Ring Cycle’s “Valkyries.”
