4 techniques for a perfect bird portrait

This female red-winged blackbird portrait uses four specific composition techniques that work together to create a strong image.

First: The color and quality of light

Shot during golden hour at Point Pelee's marsh, about 30 minutes after sunrise. The soft, warm light wraps around the bird and creates that beautiful glow across the entire scene.

Second: The Rule of Thirds

The bird sits right on the top-right intersection point. This placement creates balance and gives the image breathing room instead of centering everything.

Third: Distance creates clean backgrounds

This was shot at 700mm (200-500mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter). The key here... the bird was hundreds of feet away from the background. That distance between subject and background is what blurred everything into that smooth, distraction-free backdrop.

Fourth: Diagonal lines create energy

Look at the branch in the bottom left corner. It creates a diagonal line that pulls your eye up through the frame directly to the bird. This adds movement and dynamic tension to what could have been a static portrait.

These four techniques combined... that's what makes this image work.
