An alarming increase in vacancy rates among Nevada Highway Patrol State Troopers has state Department of Public Safety officials calling on state legislators for more funding to help with recruitment efforts.

The recent state legislative senate and assembly committee meeting on public safety revealed the NHP has a 43 percent vacancy rate with 169 open trooper positions needed to be filled.

“We can no longer assume that just because we are here that people are going to come to us. we have got a smaller group of people we’re working for, and the labor market just isn't what it used to be," said Department of Public Safety Deputy Director, Sheri Brueggemann.
