Gitar Klasik Lampung: Imam Rozali - "Kumbang Kupi"

Imam Rozali plays the unique Sumatran folk style called "gitar klasik" or "classic guitar." In this genre (called "gitar tunggal" in other parts of South Sumatra), fingerpicked melodies in special tunings are joined by lyrics sung in the poetic form called segeta.

Imam is a well-known name in his corner of Lampung, Sumatra's southernmost province. Here he plays his most popular song, "Kumbang Kupi," about a man who's eager to marry but can't afford the bride price. "If you really like me," he sings, "you'll wait one year!"
