In Maharashtra, both the BJP-Eknath Shinde alliance and Maha Vikas Aghadi claimed victory in the Gram Panchayat polls. The voting was held for 547-gram panchayats seats across 16 districts in the state on September 18 and the results were announced on September 19. However, note that elections were not contested on party tickets, though candidates are backed by political parties. Post results there has been a massive tussle, BJP claimed that it had won close to 300-gram panchayat seats including 40 nominees backed by its Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Congratulating his party workers, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said that BJP has become the number 1 party in the state again. But MVA replied. Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance comprising Uddhav Thackeray's Sena faction, Congress, and NCP presented a different picture altogether. The former Maharashtra ruling alliance stated that they won 225 seats and BJP won just 144 seats. MVA claims that NCP won 126, and Congress 62 while Uddhav's Sena got 37 seats. They also claimed that the Shinde-BJP alliance was restricted to only 185 seats. However, NCP leader Ajit Pawar focussed on the fact that the elections were held on a non-party basis.
