Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, Italy. The date of his birth is believed to be around 1265.

“Il di primo di maggio dell’anno 1274 Dante Allighieri, giovinetto di nove anni compiuti, vide la prima volta Beatrice giovinetta d’anni otto e quattro mesi; e cominciò allora ad amarla.”
(La Vita Di Beatrice Portinari – Giovanni Federzoni – Bologna 1905)

Dante said he first met Beatrice Portinari, daughter of Folco Portinari, when he was nine (she was eight and some months), and he claimed to have fallen in love with her "at first sight"

Dante claimed to have seen Beatrice again frequently after he turned 18, exchanging greetings with her in the streets of Florence, although painters and poets refer to only four encounters in Florence, and the Divine Comedy records one more in paradise.

1st encounter 1st may 1274, when Dante was 9 years old.

2nd encounter 1st may 1283, when Dante was 18 years old, he meets Beatrice – already married - “vestita di colore bianchissimo, in mezzo di due gentili donne” (dressed in the most white color, in the midle of two gente ladies) and she greeted him.

3rd encounter, in some street of Florence, Beatrice refuses to greet Dante, likely as a reaction against Dante’s publicly known relation with a florentine young girl .

4th encounter, at a wedding, and she refuses anew to greet him.

5th encounter at Paradise.
