The Golden Rule: A number is in Standard Form ONLY if it is written as A x 10^n, where A is between 1 and 10 (1 is less than or equal to A, which is less than 10). For example, 12 x 10^5 is WRONG; it must be 1.2 x 10^6.
Calculator Warning: If your calculator says "3.4 E 5", do not write "E" on your exam paper. Write 3.4 x 10^5.
Multiplying/Dividing: Group the numbers and apply Index Laws to the powers of 10.
Adding/Subtracting: You must make the powers of 10 match before you can add the numbers.
