In this rarely-glimpsed view, you are seeing the Battle of Bywater stone that was raised to commemorate the 19 hobbits who fell during that affray in 'The Scouring of the Shire' in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King.

It is S.R. 1460 and an 80-year-old Sam Gamgee tends the monument garden. A young hobbit couple looks on, and they are the same hobbits seen as a little lad an lass in my painting of "Lobelia Rescued from the Lockholes", now all grown up but still remembering the days of the Shire's occupation by Sharkey and the ruffians.

This painting is my tribute to Professor Tolkien and his own dear friends whom he lost in the Great War. The poppies commemorate their irreplaceable loss, as well as what was sacrificed by the hobbits to restore peace to the Shire.
