The assassination of Indira Gandhi, the first female Prime Minister of India, occurred on the morning of October 31, 1984. It was a pivotal moment in Indian history that triggered a period of intense communal violence.

The Event
At approximately 9:20 AM, Gandhi was walking from her residence at 1 Safdarjung Road to her nearby office at 1 Akbar Road for a scheduled interview with British actor Peter Ustinov. As she passed a wicket gate, two of her trusted bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh, opened fire on her.

Beant Singh fired three rounds from a revolver.

Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds from a submachine gun.

She was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) but was declared dead later that afternoon.

The Motive
The assassination was an act of retaliation for Operation Blue Star, which Gandhi had ordered in June 1984.

The military operation aimed to remove Sikh militants, led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who had fortified the Golden Temple in Amritsar (the holiest shrine in Sikhism).

The operation resulted in significant casualties and damage to the temple, which deeply offended and angered the Sikh community worldwide.

Immediate Aftermath
Succession: Her son, Rajiv Gandhi, was sworn in as Prime Minister on the same day.

Anti-Sikh Riots: The assassination sparked three days of horrific communal violence, primarily in New Delhi. Mobs targeted the Sikh community, leading to the deaths of thousands (official estimates cite around 3,000, while independent sources suggest up to 8,000–17,000).

Fate of the Assassins: Beant Singh was shot dead by other guards immediately after the attack. Satwant Singh was arrested, convicted, and executed by hanging in 1989.
