Newari girls who are kept in the same room by offering yoghurt as a sagun within the age of 5 to 12 years are said to keep barha or gufa. The girls are requested to avoid looking at males and rays of the sun. After 12 days traditional puja rituals are done to bring the girls out of gufa room.
Girls, before entering the gufa room, they are to see the reflection of a moon and then only enter the gufa room. At that time, they are informed that they are growing up. In the gufa room, Barha Khyak, who is called Nasal Devata, is worshipped. On the 4th day of gufa, the relatives offer the girl with natural makeup. Before 4th day, the girl in the gufa room is not allowed to eat salt or apply any kind of oil. The girl in the gufa room is fed nutritious nuts and beans. Thus, before feeding anyone in the gufa room, it is compulsory to offer the Nasal Devata (Barha Khyak) with whatever food items that enters the room.
The girls are taught to dance and sing in a way that everyone likes. Therefore, women and girls of any age start dancing when they reach the gufa room. For 12 days, the girl is under the control of Barha Khyak. On the 12th day, the girl is blindfolded and taken out of the room to see the Sun God without looking at anyone. It is believed that the girl was married to the sun god by wearing red vermilion on her forehead. It is believed that the sun god completes the necessary elements and gives the girl the qualities that a woman should have.
According to the scholar Shri Govinda Bhaktananda Rajopadhyay, keeping a gufa means that the girls become adults at that time and at that they are taught that even if they are menstruating, you can move forward in life. At that time, the gufa is said to be kept for 12 days so that girls do not get addicted with bad behavior, not to be in the company of bad boys, not to have bad thoughts. Nowadays, the cave is kept for only 6 days for study, health, and family work. There is an old saying that if a child in a gufa room dies, she should not be brought out and should be buried in the ground floor of the same room, and this should be done only by women and girls.
