In this hybrid Saling Bercerta event (in-person in Bristol and online), our guest speaker Amber will discuss Voices of the Vezo, a participatory media project seeking to engage and mobilise Vezo communities to document the rapid changes in the marine ecosystem and highlight the challenges this presents to their community. Amber will share her experience with Voices of the Vezo and discuss the benefits and challenges of using participatory video and its potential to engage and empower communities in a comanagement context. Speaker's bio

Amber is in the final year of her PhD programme at the University of Edinburgh. Her research studies ecosystem changes and social-ecological dynamics in tropical coastal ecosystems and small-scale fishing communities. Her research is based in southwest Madagascar, working with traditional Vezo fishing communities. Amber combines social, ecological, and climate data to investigate food security, adaptation, resilience, and marine conservation issues. With a strong interest in interdisciplinary methods, Amber aims to promote collaboration and co-production while bridging the gap between researchers and communities. Amber’s recent project " Voices of the Vezo" engaged youth from Vezo communities to create films, documenting the challenges Vezo communities face in maintaining their livelihoods and culture amidst rapidly changing marine ecosystems.
