"Interrotte speranze" is like a dark dream: a perfect specimen of an early 17th century madrigal. Originally published in 1619 in Venice, in Claudio Monteverdi's "Concerto. Settimo libro de madrigali", it's a good example of the master's mature style, where his total command of the expressive means of seconda pratica is married perfectly with the magnificent, fiery poetry of Giovanni Battista Guarini to produce a jewel among its peers.

Our video explores the theme of Vanitas, common in the period of Monteverdi, which uses symbols of mortality and decay, such as faded flowers and skulls - and musical instruments - to show the transience of life and the eventual futility of all human endeavour.
