Out there: “GaneShaMan was written to be both a concept album AND a collection of songs that could stand on their own. I got the basic idea on a train ride from Struer to Vejle and the whole concept as it is fell into place as I was writing and recording the album.
When work started on the album Kuko De Kobra was barely a band at all. This of course made the process rather lonely. All in all it was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life as many of those who are around me on a daily basis can attest to. Thankfully the end result makes it all worth it - but I guess you’ve heard that story many times before.
I wanted - no, NEEDED (!) - the album to be much harder sounding than “A Girl And Her Giraffe” while retaining a very melodic edge. Thankfully both producer Martin Pagaard Wolff and guitarist Martin Jepsen Andersen (who thankfully had come back into the fold later in the process) understood and delivered quite excellent performances.
And now for the concept...
The story is set in Vejle where three childhood friends - now in their thirties - are in intensive care at the hospital. They are all heavily medicated to relieve their pain. The three friends have similar backgrounds but have chosen very different paths in life.
Meanwhile two strange figures meet outside the hospital. One is a bearded man in a robe, the other is an elephant. The bearded man distracts the receptionist while the elephant sneaks in and finds the three friends in a shared hospital room.
The elephant hacks into the consciousness of the three friends and leads them down an escalator to an underground platform. Here they see some of their (mostly painful) experiences - both shared and personal - laid out as stations on a transit system.
The friends then go on journeys reliving the past with the elephant occasionally commenting on their experiences. At times the medicine wears off enough for reality to remind them of where they are and why.
I could easily disclose what each song is about and perhaps I will someday. But for the time being I feel it would be a disservice to those who like to figure things out themselves. And well - there are also those who simply cannot be bothered to read more stuff anyway. And that is okay too.
There is a great deal of autobiography in GaneShaMan - but I have also borrowed events and themes from my friends. At its core GaneShaMan is about the gap between reality and what my (working class) generation was promised when we were impressionable teens. It is about the existential war fought within oneself merging with the veiled hostility of an outside world that isn’t always thankful. It is about despair masquerading as hope. But it is also about clearing a better, smoother path in due time. The path may not become wider - but YOU will become wiser.

According to Google and Bing translators ‘Gane Shaman’/ गाने शमन/ in Hindi means ‘Songs quenching’ in English.
I have to admit that I did not find the lyrics of the song and for this reason I clung to the association of "Winnie Cooper" as merged "Winnie the Pooh" and "Mini Cooper" to build the visual solution. Enjoy the music, folks! Do not look for a calf under the ox! :) (Bulgarian proverb)
