Two government scientists have broken ranks with Boris Johnson and warned lockdown measures should be used for months longer than expected.

The two experts, who sit on the board of scientists who advise the government on coronavirus, are at odds with ministers who are putting together plans to lift restrictions in coming months as the vaccination rollout takes effect.

Sir Jeremy Farrar said infections must be cut from the current 750,000 to just 9,000 “before we can think about lifting restrictions”.

While Professor John Edmunds urged the government to keep schools closed as opening them could push the R rate above one and wants some restrictions to stay in place until Christmas. The scientist called for the rule of six and mask wearing to remain all year even after lockdown has ended.
The prime minister will reveal his roadmap out of lockdown on 22nd February and is expected to start by opening schools for some year groups as early as 8th March. Officials in Downing Street hit back at the SAGE advisors saying the PM is adamant to stick to his March target for reopening schools.

Tory MPs accused the scientists of moving the goal posts for when lockdown can end, and insisted once the vulnerable are vaccinated restrictions must end.

Almost 13.5 million people have been inoculated in the UK, representing a fifth of the entire adult population. The government is on target to hit their vaccine target of inoculating the 15 million most vulnerable Brits by next Monday early according to newspaper reports.
