I've had this Vox Mini 5 Rhythm amplifier for about a decade now and it's been extremely useful for so many situations, but it's never really sounded all that great... until now!

I've always used it with six rechargeable AA batteries in the amp's battery compartment, but then I realised that 1) 6AAx1.5V is only 9V and the DC power jack calls for 12V and 2) Rechargeable batteries don't even push out 1.5V so really all I'm getting with six of them is around 7V or so at best. That's a big drop from the 12 volts that it really wants. The result is that it's muddy sounding when quiet, and farty sounding when loud. What it needed was more power.

I looked online and found a 12.6V rechargeable power bank for $20 that was just about the right size for velcroing to the inside of the back of the amp. It has the same 12V connector as the AC power jack so there wasn't even any modification necessary, except a bit of velcro. HUGE difference in sound right away. It stays clean even at higher volumes and it brightened it up a bit too. But still not bright enough for me. I'm a bit of a treble pig.

The amp simulation settings on the amp are ok but not great, and the tone knob, even on full, leaves the amp sounding muddy with the onboard amp sims. Where the amp really shines is the 'line' setting. It's so clean you can even play bass through it. It's wonderful, especially when you use it with a preamp pedal like a SansAmp of one of the many copies. My favourite, ironically, is this Mosky Classic AC-30 pedal. It sounds more like a Vox than the Vox sims on the Vox Mini. The 3 band EQ gives me full control over the amp's sound, and the tone knob on the Vox Mini turns into this wonderful treble boost that really makes the whole thing pop.
