Between September 2014 and March 2015 a group of practitioners and academics from India, Tanzania, Bolivia and the UK began exploring the transformative potential of alternative water and sanitation supply arrangements for and by the peri-urban poor in three urban regions: Kolkata (India), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Cochabamba (Bolivia).

With the support of the International Social Sciences Council (ISSC) Transformations to Sustainability Programme, their aim was to form a translocal learning alliance to examine the distributive impact of these alternative supply arrangements, and their capacity to transform some of the deep socio-spatial injustices that plague the peri-urban.

In doing so, they have developed the foundations of an ambitious action-research project aimed at providing an innovative, grounded and in-depth analysis of the extent to which such arrangements can build water justice in a context where unmet needs are growing fastest and where conventional centralised networks are unlikely to become the norm.
