How many years until raves are declared global folk festivals? At what point did the avant-garde become detached from tradition, and certain rituals become the exclusive property of fascism? The rave is still the repetition of ritual through community and music, but it has been given a Western twist, when the most exciting offerings always occur far from our enforced centre and are replicated in the diaspora, be it a Lunar Year celebration in London, traditional Balinese music at 200 BPM, the sounds of ancient China gone club or a pop-queer epic that challenges the binarism of colonial heritage.
