Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 35 miles southeast of Leicester, is the town of Higham Ferrers.

Geographically Higham Ferrers is situated along the southeastern bank of the River Nene, with the town of Rushden to its immediate south. A castle was built in Higham Ferrers shortly after the Norman Conquest, and settlement began to grow around its gates.

In 1193 William III de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby, was born. In 1251 the town's first charter was granted to de Ferrers, who was Lord of the Manor, and a borough was created. A second charter was granted in 1556 during the reign of Mary I. By this time, the town's castle had already been demolished following years of neglect.

At the heart of the town is St Mary's Church. This was built in phases between the 13th and 15th century, with much of the original building work surviving to the present. The spire dates from 1631, following reconstruction work after a fire. Just across from the church is Church House - one of the town's oldest buildings and thought to be the ancestral home of George Washington. His great grandfather, Lawrence Washington, who was Mayor of Northampton in 1532 and 1545 once lived here.

In the 1360s, Henry Chichele was born in Higham Ferrers. Chichele went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury in 1414 up until his death in 1443. In 1422 he established Chichele College for secular canons right here in his town of birth. Although the college was surrendered to Henry VIII in 1542, portions of the original building work still remain, as can be seen on College Street around the end of the walk.

In 1894 a railway station opened in the town. This was the terminus of the Higham Ferrers Branch Line which linked up to Wellingborough on the Midland Main Line. The station eventually closed to passengers in 1959. Today the main form of public transport is a bus route running between Northampton and Raunds, stopping at Higham Ferrers. The neigbouring town of Rushden is easily accessible on foot, situated about a mile to the south.
