Aguinaldos are mandatory "Christmas bonuses" that you need to pay any domestic employees before December 20th of each year. Mexicans depend on this additional payment at the end of the year and it's required by law in many situations.

For the most part (in my non-legal opinion,) if you pay someone hourly or weekly, then they are considered an employee. If you pay them "by the job" or "by the piece" then they are a contractor. Employees MUST be paid aguinaldos. Contractors CAN be paid tips if they regularly help you out.

It's best to make this clear and in writing (signed by both parties) so that you both understand of someone is a contractor or an employee.

Labor in Mexico is very inexpensive compared to the US or Canada, but you need to remember to pay the extra bit in December. And if you have any concerns, hire a Mexican attorney (and pay them by the job.)

These must be paid by December 20th and be a minimum 15 days pay (for full-time workers who've worked a full year.)
