Using iBeacons, Mobile Technologies, and Multi-TouchFoil Displays to Support New Forms of Community Engagement and Learning in Penn State Public Places

We propose an 18-month project to design and research three use cases to the development of a PSU platform to support location-based learning and engagement in Penn State public spaces. Specifically, we conduct research to refine a beta-version of an integrated platform called “Places,” developed by Educational and Technology Services at Penn State. “Places” is a content-management system (CMS) and mobile application for creating content that can be displayed on a mobile device when triggered by a user’s proximity to an iBeacon. iBeacons are low-energy bluetooth transmitters that trigger a mobile computer when a user is in close proximity to it. The Places platform will allow faculty, staff, and students to easily create content (without programming skills) for deployment on iBeacons. We view this project as supporting both the land-grant mission of Penn State to make high quality research accessible to the public and online innovation in learning. Our project will achieve the following goals: (a) increase the functionality of the Places platform, (b) conduct empirical research on design principles to advance mobile computing practice for learning outdoors in public spaces, and (c) support the development of a future NSF-proposal.
